Dan verlaat het Verenigd Koninkrijk de Europese Unie. De regelingen die bij handel tussen EU-landen onderling gelden, gelden straks niet meer voor de handel met het VK. Daar moeten dus nieuwe afspraken over gemaakt worden. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk wordt een land buiten de EU Na 29 maart 2019 maakt het VK geen deel meer uit van de EU. Vanaf dan ziet de EU het VK als een land buiten de EU en gelden dezelfde regels als voor andere landen buiten de EU. Wel zetten de EU en het VK zich in om afspraken te maken over de toekomstige relatie en bijvoorbeeld tot een handelsakkoord komen. Harde of cliff-edge Brexit? Een harde Brexit is een Brexit waarbij het VK de Europese interne markt en de Europese douane-unie verlaat. Als we kijken naar wat het VK heeft aangegeven in de onderhandelingen, lijkt het VK aan te sturen op een harde Brexit. Dit betekent dat u in de toekomst te maken krijgt met de douaneprocedures en importtarieven. En met andere extra handelsbelemmeringen. In het geval van een ‘zeer harde’ Brexit, ook vaak het cliff edge scenario genoemd, ligt er geen overeenkomst en dan valt alle handel tussen het VK en de EU onder de regels van de Wereldhandelsorganisatie (WTO). Dat betekent importtarieven en controles bij de grens. Stijgende kosten dus. Het is belangrijk om nu al na te gaan wat dat straks voor uw handel kan betekenen. Met welke administratieve zaken krijgt u te maken? Welke investeringen moet u doen in software, personeel en logistiek? Wat verandert er aan de grens? En verandert uw kostprijs? Heeft het zin een vestiging in het VK te openen? Of voorraad gaan houden. Wat de uitkomst van de onderhandelingen ook is, zeker is dat het VK de EU verlaat. U moet zich dan al voorbereiden op zakendoen met een land buiten de EU. Als u daarbij uitgaat van een cliff-edge Brexit, bent u goed voorbereid.
